Chart showing efficacy vs Tylenol® PM

Advil PM delivers better-quality sleep than Tylenol PM

The efficacy of Advil PM was proven significantly better than Tylenol® PM and placebo in a double-blind, randomized, single-dose, parallel-group, single-center study.

The combination of ibuprofen with diphenhydramine† in Advil PM is a safe and effective pain reliever and sleep aid when used as directed.

Efficacy, Safety and Dosing

  • Improved sleep duration and efficiency

Chart showing efficacy compared to ibuprofen alone

A randomized study involving 329 patients confirmed findings from two previously conducted studies, showing that the combination of ibuprofen and diphenhydramine in Advil PM is more effective than ibuprofen alone for improving sleep duration.

In addition, based on actigraphy, this study showed that the combination significantly improved sleep efficiency and reduced the time awake after sleep onset compared to ibuprofen alone. Importantly, significantly fewer subjects taking the combination required rescue medication for pain and sleep.

Overall, the combination of ibuprofen 400 mg and diphenhydramine 50 mg found in Advil PM provided:

    • Significantly longer duration of sleep, as assessed both objectively and subjectively. On average, the combination provided approximately 1 hour of additional sleep compared to ibuprofen alone.
    • Significantly greater sleep efficiency than ibuprofen alone

∆ = IBU 400/DPH 50 - IBU 400 difference (observed); for parameters showing medians it is the hazard ratio of IBU 400/DPH 50 vs IBU 400.

*IBU 400/DPH 50 group was significantly better than the IBU 400 group; P≤.05.

  • The safety profile of Advil PM is consistent with the known, favorable safety profiles of ibuprofen and diphenhydramine

Research has shown that ibuprofen at OTC doses has a proven overall safety profile with a low incidence of serious gastrointestinal (GI) events and minimal risk of causing renal and associated cardiovascular events. For additional ibuprofen-specific safety data and warnings, please click here

Diphenhydramine is the leading sleep aid used in OTC medicine, with a favorable safety profile. In a randomized, single-dose, double-blind, parallel-group, single-center study of 329 patients with oral surgery pain3:

Adverse events reported were mild to moderate in severity and resolved without additional intervention

The most frequently reported adverse event was nausea

Additionally, an extensive clinical program involving nearly 2500 subjects showed diphenhydramine did not negatively impact the favorable safety profile of ibuprofen alone.
