Sensodyne Science: Potassium Nitrate Formulations

See how potassium nitrate works

Dentine tubules and potassium nitrate

Potassium nitrate formulations build protection over time to help desensitize nerves in tooth pulp1-6

  • Sensodyne potassium formulations contain 5% potassium nitrate (KNO3). Potassium is an ingredient that is clinically proven to reduce dentin hypersensitivity:1-6
  • Potassium ions can travel into exposed dentin tubules from the tooth surface to reach internal nerves
  • Build-up of potassium ions over time helps desensitize nerves in the tooth pulp, making them irresponsive to sensitivity stimuli (e.g. cold water, hot coffee, etc.)

Sensodyne Daily Care: low abrasion formulas

Mean dentin loss resulting from toothpaste use after 14 days

Low abrasive formulas especially formulated for sensitive teeth

Exposed dentin is up to 10x softer than enamel and so, it needs to be treated with care. Sensodyne toothpastes with potassium nitrate are low abrasive formulas, and have been shown in an in situ study to have a lower impact on dentin loss than toothpaste with moderate or high abrasivity.*7
