Clinical Study: Stain-Removal Potential of Two Experimental Dentifrices
A randomized, controlled, examiner-blind study of four toothpastes over 8 weeks
The clinical study investigated the extrinsic stain-removal potential of an experimental low-abrasivity, desensitizing toothpaste containing 5% sodium tripolyphosphate (STP) and 1% alumina. In this randomized, controlled, examiner-blind study, 142 adults brushed twice daily for 8 weeks with one of four study toothpastes.
Key findings of the study:
- Extrinsic stain removal: The 5% STP and 1% alumina toothpaste produced a significant reduction from baseline in extrinsic tooth staining, measured with the Macpherson modification of the Lobene Stain Index (MLSI), at Weeks 4 and 8 (p<0.0001).
- Comparison with other toothpastes: Ultra-low-, moderate- and higher-abrasivity toothpastes also showed significant reductions from baseline in tooth staining at Weeks 4 and 8, with no between-treatment differences at either time point.
- Whitening benefit: The study concluded that a low-abrasivity, desensitizing toothpaste containing STP, together with the mechanical action of toothbrushing, removes extrinsic stains and provides teeth-whitening benefits.
