Measuring the impact on patients' quality of life

To understand the impact of dentine hypersensitivity on quality of life, a team at the School of Clinical Dentistry, University of Sheffield, UK, in collaboration with Haleon, developed the Dentine Hypersensitivity Experience Questionnaire (DHEQ).8

Both qualitative and quantitative development and validation in a general population have shown that the DHEQ exhibits good psychometric properties. Its use can further the understanding of subjective impacts of dentine hypersensitivity on quality of life.8

The DHEQ explores how quality of life is affected by dentine hypersensitivity, such as its impact on patients’ daily activities or emotional wellbeing.8

  • How patients adapt to dentine hypersensitivity

Across six clinical studies, the DHEQ has revealed greater quality of life improvements with specialist sensitivity toothpastes vs. fluoride-only toothpastes*8

    Man with a cold drink

    Daily restrictions

Greater improvement in daily restrictions caused by dentine hypersensitivity

    Woman with slice of watermelon

    Social difficulties

*Sub-analysis of six clinical studies from a pooled analysis involving 442 participants aged 18–65 years in Canada, Europe and the USA. All participants who gave ratings of 5, 6 or 7 (agree a little, agree, strongly agree) on a 7-point impact scale were considered to have the quality of life impact in question8
