Sensodyne’s most advanced whitening technology

  • Graph showing how Sensodyne Clinical White toothpaste whitens teeth by up to 2 shades compared to a regular toothpaste after 4 and 8 weeks twice daily use

This study was a randomised, controlled, single-blind clinical study where participants (n=272) brushed with either Sensodyne Clinical White or Aquafresh (US Formulation) for 2 minutes twice a day for 4 and 8 week periods. Vita shade was measured on facial surfaces of the 4 maxillary incisors. The examiner compared the subject's tooth colour with the shade guide under standard lighting conditions.5

The whitening technology in Sensodyne Clinical White dissolves and removes stains. Clinical study results demonstrated statistically significant improvement in tooth colour after 4 and 8 weeks twice-daily brushing compared to baseline and compared to a reference dentifrice. They also showed a median 2-shade improvement in tooth colour from baseline following 8 weeks twice daily brushing, as measured by ‘Vita’ Bleached Guide Shade Score (see figure above).5

*after 8 weeks of twice daily brushing

  • Graph showing a significant reduction in tooth staining when Sensodyne Clinical White is used twice a day for 8 weeks

The graph shows a statistically significant reduction in tooth stain from baseline through twice daily brushing, as measured by Total MLSI (modification of the Lobene Stain Index) to a reference dentifrice (4 and 8 weeks).5

MLSI was measured on facial surfaces of anterior 6 maxillary and mandibular teeth and the lingual surfaces of the 6 anterior mandibular teeth (see figure above). Examiner rated each tooth surface for Area (A) and Intensity (I). Total MLSI score was calculated as A x I.5

  • Stained bovine enamel samples treated with different whitening toothpastes and just water show that Sensodyne Clinical White removes stains effectively

An in vitro method, using stained bovine enamel samples, allowed visualisation of the stain removal effect of Sensodyne Clinical White and also allowed comparison with other whitening toothpastes. All specimens began as the same colour and were brushed with the same amount of toothpaste slurry before images were taken for comparison.9

  • Graph showing mean enamel gloss score by toothpaste formula post-application over time

Mean enamel gloss score by toothpaste formula post-application over time was evaluated visually in clinical studies by experienced examiners using a subjective scale. The graph shows statistically significant greater improvement in enamel gloss and smoothness at 1 and 4 weeks†and improvements in enamel surface gloss**7.

*vs standard toothpaste†compared to baseline and regular toothpaste** compared to control STP (sodium tripolyphosphate)

  • Graph showing the extrinsic stain score of toothpaste formula post-application over time

In a single center, examiner-blind, randomised, controlled, parallel group study in healthy adults, there was statistically significant stain prevention over time, following a visual stain assessment of the tooth surface to measure extrinsic stain score via MLSI.7

MLSI was measured on facial surfaces of anterior 6 maxillary and mandibular teeth and the lingual surfaces of the 6 anterior mandibular teeth. Examiner rated each tooth surface for Area (A) and Intensity (I). Total MLSI score was calculated as A x I.7

Subjects were required to have presence of extrinsic dental stain on the surfaces of the anterior teeth. Following a wash out period with a conventional silica dentifrice, subjects received a dental scale and polish and were randomised to application.7
