Nicola West and colleagues led a scientific symposium at the IADR General Session 2023 titled ‘Seven Country European Prevalence Data on Tooth Wear and Dentine Hypersensitivity’, which was supported by Haleon.

The team presented the data from the study completed across seven countries in Europe (UK, Ireland, Switzerland, Italy, Spain, Portugal and Germany) in 3,551 volunteers. This study follows up on the first of its kind which captured similar prevalence and risk factors.

These unique data sets demonstrate significant positive associations between clinically elicited sensitive teeth, erosive tooth wear and gum recession and between gum recession and periodontal status with higher prevalence of all conditions.

The presentation discusses observed country and cohort specific differences in behaviours and prevalence figures and raises the value of delivering country targeted advice to help improve understanding of how known risk factors interact to cause or exacerbate these conditions.

Introduction: Associations between recession, dentine hypersensitivity, erosive tooth wear and periodontal health: The 2nd European population-based cross-sectional study on 3551 individuals from 7 countries

Introducing the symposium, Professor David Herrera, University Complutense of Madrid, will give a brief overview of the associations between gum recession, sensitive teeth, erosive tooth wear and periodontal health from this study.
